Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute hosted the All-Ukrainian scientific conference “The Chernobyl Disaster: Medical, Environmental, and Social Consequences 40 Years Later”—one of the key events the university organized in memory of the Chernobyl tragedy.

The conference brought together nuclear scientists, medical professionals, ecologists, demographers, historians, sociologists, Chernobyl accident liquidators, representatives of government agencies, and the academic community for an interdisciplinary dialogue.

✔️ Participants in the event included: First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Igor Sikorsky KPI Oleksandr Korniienko; Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Denys Kurbatov; First Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bogdanov; Chairwoman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Social Policy and Protection of Veterans’ Rights Halyna Tretyakova; and other high-ranking officials. Video messages were delivered by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Yuriy Vitrenko, Ukraine’s representative to international organizations in Vienna.

Participants focused on reflecting on the consequences of the Chernobyl tragedy, seeking effective solutions, and preventing similar challenges in the future.

ℹ️Igor Sikorsky KPI played a significant role in overcoming the consequences of the disaster. In the very first days after the accident, specialists from the Faculty of Chemical Technology developed a mobile technology for decontaminating radioactively contaminated water, which made it possible to quickly treat large volumes.

📌 A symbol of courage and professionalism is Kyiv Polytechnic graduate Oleksandr Lelechenko — deputy head of the Chernobyl NPP’s electrical shop—who, on the night of the accident, prevented a new explosion, averting an even more tragic turn of events. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

As part of the conference, flowers were laid at the monument to Oleksandr Lelechenko, a hero and liquidator of the Chernobyl accident.

🤝 We sincerely thank the event organizers—the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute—for bringing the scientific community together around a topic of national importance.
