The International Center for Mathematics in Ukraine (ICMU) honorary award, introduced this year, was given to Oleksiy Galganov, a PhD student at the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. He became one of six winners selected from among the best mathematics students from all leading Ukrainian universities.

Oleksii's scientific achievements became possible thanks to the fruitful cooperation with his mentor, Andrii Ilienko, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory. “I became interested in the topic of random permutations during my bachelor's degree when my supervisor proposed a problem related to the classical probabilistic problem of the inattentive secretary,” Oleksii recalls.

The combination of the supervisor's experience and the graduate student's creative ideas provided a unique synergy that allowed them to achieve significant research results. And their joint article “Short cycles of random permutations with cycle weights: A point processes approach”, which was published in the prestigious scientific journal Statistics & Probability Letters, was highly praised by the international mathematical community for its innovative approach to the analysis of cycles of random permutations.

“The most promising area of research is functional limit theorems that describe the behavior of the composition of permutation cycles in dynamics,” says Oleksii Galaganov, ”We will work on developing a new specific theoretical apparatus for describing functional theorems for point processes.

The young scientist presented his research at such prestigious events as the conference named after Academician Mykhailo Kravchuk and the All-Ukrainian Conference of Young Mathematicians, organized by the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory of KPI together with the Ukrainian State University named after Mykhailo Drahomanov and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, as well as at the conference “The Skorokhod Readings” at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Among other achievements, Oleksiy won a silver award at the 28th International Mathematics Competition for University Students (2021), won the first round of the All-Ukrainian competition of student research papers in the 2023/2024 academic year, and won multiple victories at the Open Student Mathematics Olympiad of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (2021-2024).

Oleksii is not only engaged in research work, he has joined the project “Caring for the Caring” to translate into Ukrainian a fundamental textbook on mathematical analysis by the outstanding mathematician G.M. Fichtenholz, who was born and studied in Odesa. This project has received wide international recognition. For example, Professor Stewart from the University of Warwick (UK) has the following to say about it: “I consider this project to be a vital and significant contribution to the future of Ukraine, and an example for us all.” Oleksiy's contribution to this work demonstrates his commitment to making mathematical science more accessible to Ukrainian students and researchers.

Receiving the ICMU award is not only a recognition of Oleksii Halganov's personal achievements, but also a confirmation of the high level of mathematical education and science at our university. We wish Oleksii and his supervisor new achievements and discoveries that will strengthen the position of Ukrainian science in the international arena!
