☑️ Kyiv Polytechnic Institute participated in the hearings of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Social Policy and Protection of Veterans’ Rights on the topic “40 Years Since the Chernobyl Disaster: Current Realities and Future Challenges.”

Olena Ivanenko, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Automation, Industrial Engineering, and Ecology (FAPIE) at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, delivered a presentation in which she emphasized the importance of rethinking the historical experience of Ukrainian science and engineering, especially during crises and large-scale challenges.

ℹ️ Special attention was given to a unique development by KPI scientists led by Oleksandr Shutko. In the very first days following the 1986 accident, they created a mobile technology for decontaminating radioactively contaminated water, which made it possible to:

— rapidly treat large volumes of water;
— operate without stationary infrastructure;
— significantly reduce the level of radioactive contamination.

⚙️ This case study serves as an example of how science, engineering expertise, and swift management decisions deliver results under the most challenging conditions.

☢️ Participants in the hearings also visited sites within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone:

• Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
• the city of Chernobyl and the “Star of Polyn” memorial complex
• the monument “To Those Who Saved the World”
• ChNPP State Specialized Enterprise
• “Duga” Radar Station
• “Energetik” Power Plant

🔺Decades later, Chernobyl remains one of the most powerful lessons, clearly illustrating the cost of miscalculations and the importance of professional decisions.
