History of the university

In the second half of the 70s in the KPI, there were more than 30 thousand students, 7 thousand employees. More than half the departments (63%) were headed by scientists of higher qualification - doctors and professors. From all 1745 teachers 86 have doctoral degrees, 851 - candidates of sciences, 14 teachers were awarded the Lenin, state, federal and republican prizes. In 1980, there were branches of remote education: 21 in Kiev, 4 in Chernigov, 3 - in Zhitomir, 2 in Cherkassy second branches [17, p. 13].

From the first days of the war, many teachers and staff, alumni and students of the institute voluntarily and through mobilization joined the Red Army. M.F. Shpilko (Director of the Institute in 1937-1941) and A.S. Melnikov (Deputy Director in 1933-1941) who shortly before the outbreak of war led the Polytechnic Institute in Lvov participated in the fighting.

Tashkent Institute was located on the base of Central Asian Industrial Institute (SAII) and began to exist as an independent institution. In its structure 4 faculty and 12 departments functioned, where 31 students of the second up to the fifth course studied.

Integral page story of KPI is its participation in the general democratic movement in the country that was carried out under the banner of democratization of higher education and the freedom of student associations. Students demanded the elimination of police surveillance in higher education, complained repressive tsarist policy.

On the basis of research for years 1966-1971 it was received 432 copyright certificates and 20 patents; 372 textbooks and monographs were published,33 doctoral and 499 master's theses were defended.

The liberation of Kiev in November 1943 allowed to resume the work of the Institute. The assistant professor V.I. Gorodisky was appointed to head the restoration. The registration for faculty, staff, students returning to college was started. Up to 25 November, it was registered 8 professors, 9 associate professors, 16 teachers, 30 support staff employees, 20 students.

Improving the quality of training was associated with improvements in the entire teaching work - methodical reports at meetings of departments and research councils, the development of new laboratory and practical tasks, visual aids, holding open sessions, instilling students skills of independent work.

An intensive construction was continuing in KPI. In 1970 Department of Radio Electronics celebrated the housewarming in the new laboratory building.
