Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is one of the few technical universities in Ukraine whose mission explicitly focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals. For the university, sustainable development is a strategic area of activity rather than a declaration. It covers the educational process, research and the life of the university community. An important indicator of how far these values have become part of everyday life at KPI is how aware students and teaching staff are of the concept of sustainable development. Materials on the topic are collected on the university's sustainable development website, and related academic courses are listed on a separate page. After all, knowledge, values and the willingness to act determine how sustainability principles are put into practice, both in university life and in graduates' future careers.
Every year, the university conducts an online survey of students and teaching staff. It is organised by the SocioPlus Educational and Research Centre for Applied Sociology, and every member of the KPI community can take part.
In the photo: survey resultsAccording to the survey for the 2025–2026 academic year, 81.1% of Kyiv Polytechnic students are aware of the concept of society's sustainable development. Of these, 38.0% consider themselves fully aware and 43.1% rather aware. At the same time, 10.7% of respondents said they were rather not aware of the concept, and 8.2% said they were not aware of it at all.
Thus, the vast majority of students are familiar with the ideas of sustainable development. However, almost one in five respondents rates their awareness as insufficient. This points to areas where more work is needed: spreading information about sustainable development among first-year students, explaining the Sustainable Development Goals more often through practical examples from different fields of study, and involving students in university projects and initiatives.
The survey results can serve as a basis for analysing and improving educational programmes and internal communication. Consequently, systematic work to raise awareness remains an important part of the image of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and its contribution to achieving global and national sustainable development goals.
