During November-December 2024, the staff of the H.I. Denysenko Scientific and Technical Library prepared a basic comprehensive course of open lectures “Must-have for research” for postgraduate students of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and for all researchers who are interested in new knowledge.
The course consisted of seven logically connected lectures delivered online. The course was designed primarily for young researchers to provide them with basic knowledge and skills in using digital tools at different stages of research. However, the lectures were also attended by professors and researchers with different scientific backgrounds, as well as students from both our and other Ukrainian universities. In total, 447 students joined the lecture, including 187 graduate students, 82 teachers, 80 researchers, and 43 students.

The advantage of the proposed training course is its comprehensive approach: the lectures covered various aspects of research organization, from searching for sources to building a researcher's image, and the online format made the course accessible to a wide range of participants.
The course was opened with the lecture “Searching for Scientific Information”. Its purpose was to provide students with an opportunity to improve their search skills, to teach them how to find the necessary scientific information in various sources faster.
The lecture “Fundamentals of Research Data Management” introduced effective practices and modern tools for managing research data.
The participants learned how to use specialized software for storing, organizing, and citing literature during the lecture “Zotero Bibliographic Manager: From Introduction to Effective Use”.
From the lecture “Fundamentals of Academic Writing, or the Integrity of Publishing”, the students of the basic course learned about the ethical principles of scientific activity, the rules of publication, and the foundations of a culture of academic integrity.
During the discussion of the topic “Understanding Science through Numbers: Scientometrics for Practitioners”, young researchers learned to analyze scientific productivity and received information about the ambiguity of using certain indicators to compare authors and institutions.
The lecture “International Citation Styles: From Discussion to Effective Use” guided researchers on how to properly cite sources in scientific papers.
The last lecture of the course “Creating and Updating Author Profiles in the Digital Environment” was devoted to the formation of a professional image of a scientist.
We hope that after completing the lecture course, the students will be able to improve their productivity in scientific activities through effective information retrieval, data organization, and high-quality presentation of research results. Knowledge of international citation styles and understanding of the principles of academic integrity will also help improve the quality of publications. By improving their own scientific profile, researchers will have the opportunity to expand their cooperation with other scientists. In general, new knowledge and skills should increase the impact and competitiveness of our researchers.
Therefore, the course of lectures “Must-have for research” is an important step towards improving the skills of scientists, popularizing modern tools in the field of scientific communication and integrating researchers into the global scientific space.
